Kal was born in New York and began studying piano and then added cello in elementary school. His entire family is gifted musically with everyone playing multiple instruments. His love of classical music started early because it was either being played on the radio or performed at home by his siblings. Kal’s vast knowledge of the piano, violin, and cello repertoire helps his students have fun playing because there is no shortage of wonderful selections to play.
When Kal was in high school, piano performance was always paramount. In addition, Kal studied cello with Nellis DeLay-Harvout, principal cellist of the New York City Ballet Orchestra and sister of the world renown and distinguished Julliard school of Music violin instructor Dorothy DeLay. During high school, Kal played cello in the school orchestra as well as the all county and all state orchestras. Kal also gave cello recital performances with veteran concert pianist Gloria Carney, who was the accompanist of the legendary cellist Leonard Rose.
Kal graduated from the University of Vermont with a BA in Music Theory and Composition and concentrated in piano and cello performance. Kal introduced his own compositions in both piano solo and chamber music, playing the cello part. In addition, Kal played cello in the University of Vermont orchestra. Kal also had a student piano recital where he debuted 3 of his works showcasing different styles of composition in his piano music.
It was during his college years that Kal learned violin (because there is so much great music to play) and now students always enjoy the insight that Kal shares with them when playing the standard violin repertoire. Kal also can help with chamber music coaching for violin for string quartets and piano trios (piano, violin, cello).
Currently, Kal teaches piano, violin, and cello. Kal has a unique ability to select pieces that are tailored to the musical preference of the student. He will suggest classical (baroque, classical, romantic, and modern periods), show tunes, Ragtime, Blues, Hymns, Rock, Pop, etc. etc. and other pieces that fit the technical level and interest of the student. Kal is sourced well and often times will select favorite pieces arranged in an easier style so students can enjoy playing these works while their technique catches up to the original composition.
The lesson plan consists of fun exercises (to build finger strength and technique), music performance (with difficult passages broken down measure by measure to help the student learn it as quickly as possible), fun duets (to build musical ability by playing together- all students LOVE this), and a recap and plan to keep the playing fun with continuous progress.
Kal believes that teaching, especially beginners, is an honor. Music is his passion and teaching young students how to read music in all clefs, obtain proper technique and, learn how to make the music come alive (once the technical challenges have been mastered) through music interpretation is one of the greatest rewards in life.
